John Tanner (August 15, 1778 – April 13, 1850) was a leading figure in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and a chief financial backer of the.

Born in Salt Lake City, Utah, on July 27, 1950, to William Coats Tanner Jr. and Athelia Sears Tanner, President Tanner grew up in South Pasadena, California.

Tanner has served in the LDS Church as a bishop and stake president.

John Sears Tanner was serving as mission president of the Brazil São Paulo South Mission when he was called as the first counselor in the Sunday School general.

John Tanner was raised in Southern California, one of a large and happy family of thirteen children.
