Boris berezovsky rachmaninov biography
Born in Moscow, Boris Berezovsky studied at the Moscow Conservatory with Eliso Virsaladze and privately with Alexander Satz....
I’ve by and large given up on Berezovsky today, but the young pianist of the 90s and very early 00s was something quite unusual.
Boris Vadimovich Berezovsky (Russian: Борис Вадимович Березовский; born 4 January 1969) is a Russian pianist.
Two adjectives which always come to mind when I listen to his playing from the time are “cool” and “horizontal”. I suppose at least the latter comes from his near perfect tonal control, as well as the ever present legato leading to this smooth, streamlined playing style which is entirely his own.
It’s an approach which results in an almost deliberately monolithic piano sound, but nonetheless one with style and finish, and as a Russian Berezovsky’s music making resides more in spirit and character anyway than play with effects and devices.
A more unfortunate aspect of his playing is what sounds to me like a heavy reliance on the una corda pedal… but at the end of the day that too is part of what makes up the unmistakably Berezovskian sound (and he could thunder with the best of them when needed either how).
